When I was a seventeen year old girl who had been through atypical trauma, this absolutely mimicked a lot of the ways I tried to deal with it and also how I would reach out and form bonds with people. Let's remember this is the story of a seventeen year old girl, so if you were looking for impeccable judgement and perfect emotional comportment you are looking in the wrong place. I can understand that point of view, but I disagree and wouldn't let that put you off giving it a go. I did see a reasonably scathing review on this book calling out Shiloh (the MC) as absurd for her reactions / things she says or does.
I think within a few chapters you'd be able to tell if you feel the same. But that all only carries off if the characters are very present - in this they were for me. It works particularly well in RH because people already off the tragectory of societal 'norm' are more likely to consider alternative lifestyles, have different relationship expectations and needs and are less likely to assume happiness as a given or a right. This overall type of story works well in the romance genre because bonds forged in the fire or wake of mutual tragedy are strong enough to match the intensity the reader is supposed to believe for the timelines and scenarios. So that's the summary but here's more detail if I haven't convinced you yet:įor this style of book (RH, trauma story) it had a large amount of authenticity in the subtle details. So if you liked the early books in those series, you should love this - it has that blend of anomalous teen hardship, dark notes in the issues it tackles, and a strong thread of character and relationship building weaving throughout that brings the sweetness and makes it addictive and fun but also powerful. With Veil diaries done and long waits between Ghost Birds, this series promises to fill a very similar (beloved) place for me. This is what I needed in my life right now.
